When I returned to photograph The Old Abbey in Drogheda on 9 September 2026, I arrived with an agenda beyond simply capturing the weathered masonry. I needed to settle a persistent archival error that had haunted my notes for twenty years.
Going through my image catalogues spanning from 2006 to 2026, I realised I had fallen into a subtle trap: I had conflated two entirely separate medieval towers standing only a short walk apart on the north side of the River Boyne. This mix-up was compounded by centuries of overlapping ecclesiastical titles and colloquial labels.
Two Towers, One Town
The confusion stems from Drogheda’s rare survival of two freestanding medieval belfry arches. Both are Gothic relics of thirteenth-century monastic foundations that survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries, yet they present two completely different faces of the town’s built environment.
On one hand stands Magdalene Tower, set high on the hill towards Sunday’s Gate and Patrick Street. This is the more intact, refined survivor of the Dominican Friary, founded around 1224 by Archbishop Lucas de Netterville. Rising two storeys above a soaring pointed crossing arch, it displays delicate stone tracery, stepped battlements, and the scars of Cromwell’s 1649 artillery bombardment. Sitting on manicured ground bordered by quiet residential plots, it carries the dignified, detached air of a national monument preserved in amber.
On the other hand stands The Old Abbey on Old Abbey Lane off West Street—the structure my lens focused on this September.
The Problem with Names
The linguistic knot surrounding this second site is considerable:
Colloquial: To local townspeople, it is almost universally known simply as The Old Abbey.
Heritage Registers: In antiquarian texts and official surveys, it is catalogued under St Mary’s Priory.
Medieval Charters: It was established around 1206 by Ursus de Swemele as the Hospital of St Mary d’Urso for the Canons Regular of St Augustine.
When auditing my early 2006–2009 records—taken before in-camera GPS was standard—I found myself repeatedly second-guessing which site I had documented. In some folders, historical notes on Ursus de Swemele’s hospital sat alongside mental recollections of high, traceried windows. In others, the vernacular name “The Old Abbey” blurred with modern references to St Mary’s, particularly given that Drogheda’s prominent parish churches of St Mary sit across the river on the south side.
The Reality of Old Abbey Lane
Standing before the tower in 2026, the architectural distinction is unmistakable. The Old Abbey does not possess the lofty, delicate upper chambers of the Dominican tower. Instead, it is a muscular, truncated central crossing tower spanning an active urban thoroughfare.
Its Gothic belfry arch is monumental and raw, stripped of decorative frippery and scarred by centuries of encroachment. When I first photographed it extensively in 2009, its limestone piers served as literal back-walls for local industry, with Murdock & Sons’ plumbing premises and corrugated lean-tos abutting 800-year-old masonry.
Today, that “living ruin” grit has yielded to heavy conservation cordons, stabilising the West Gable and the belfry after years of structural concern. Yet even behind safety barriers, its character remains distinct: it is an urban ruin embedded directly into the commercial grain of Drogheda’s streetscape.
Concrete Decay and Medieval Survival: The Abbey Shopping Centre
Nowhere is that urban entanglement sharper than behind the tower, where medieval heritage collides directly with mid-century modern ruin: the Abbey Shopping Centre.
Missing letters on its battered signage serve as a quiet herald for an abandoned complex. Opened in November 1973 as Drogheda’s first enclosed retail centre—built on the site of the old Abbey Ballroom and cinema following a devastating 1969 fire—it once anchored town-centre commerce with a supermarket (initially VG, later SuperValu), twin cinemas, a café, and roughly twenty retail units.
Over the past two decades, consumer gravity migrated east and south to newer developments like Scotch Hall and Laurence Town Centre. Left behind, the Abbey Shopping Centre slid into terminal vacancy. Today, the complex is completely boarded up, heavily weathered, and widely regarded as a major town-centre dereliction issue.
Because the rear wall and former car park directly abut the medieval precinct of St Mary d’Urso, the decaying 1970s concrete shell literally chokes the 13th-century monument, blocking public sightlines and restricting pedestrian permeability. Current West End regeneration debates—and calls for Louth County Council to execute a Compulsory Purchase Order—envision clearing the blighted retail block to create a dedicated public square and indoor market hall, finally granting the crossing arch breathing room.
A Town of Retreating Orders
The strange juxtaposition at Old Abbey Lane—a thirteenth-century monastery ruined by Henry VIII, hemmed in by a twentieth-century mall ruined by shifting retail patterns—mirrors Drogheda’s broader ecclesiastical narrative.
Monastic life in Drogheda is not solely a medieval memory; it is an ongoing story of quiet departure. The town’s historical religious presence has steadily contracted:
The Franciscans: After nearly 800 years of continuous service, the Franciscan Friary church closed its doors in August 2000, later gifted to the town to become the Highlanes Municipal Art Gallery.
The Dominicans: Despite vigorous local campaigns, petitions, and public vigils, the Dominican Order officially withdrew from their modern priory and church on Wellington Quay in the mid-2010s, ending an eight-century ministry that began at the very footing of Magdalene Tower.
The Augustinians: While the medieval Canons of St Mary d’Urso vanished centuries ago, later foundations across Ireland have faced similar consolidations and closures due to demographic decline.
Standing on Old Abbey Lane, you find yourself at the intersection of three distinct eras of decline: the medieval suppression of monastic orders, the post-millennial retreat of working religious houses, and the hollowed-out carcass of 1970s retail capitalism. Documenting these stones over twenty years has made one truth plain: while the commercial and religious tides ebb and flow, the raw limestone arches simply endure.
