The Naming of Dublin’s Temple Bar: A Tale of Land and Language
Temple Bar, the renowned cultural and entertainment quarter in the heart of Dublin, owes its name to a combination of a prominent 17th-century figure and the historical topography of the area. The name is not, as some might assume, a direct reference to a religious temple or a legal institution, but rather a legacy of Sir William Temple and the landscape of the River Liffey’s south bank.
In the early 1600s, Sir William Temple, a distinguished English academic and statesman who served as the Provost of Trinity College Dublin, owned a residence and extensive gardens in the area. This personal connection led to the locale becoming identified with his family name.
The second part of the name, “Bar,” is understood to derive from the historical use of the word to describe a raised embankment or a pathway along a river. In the 17th century, the land now known as Temple Bar was a reclaimed marshy estuary of the River Liffey. A “bar” or sandbank would have provided a walkable route along the river, and the one running alongside the Temple family’s property naturally became known as Temple’s Bar. Over time, this evolved into the name for the entire district.
While there is a famous district of the same name in London, which historically marked the boundary of the City of London, the Dublin nomenclature is believed to have developed independently, rooted in the local geography and land ownership of the period. The prior name for the parish was St. Andrews Parish.
Today, Temple Bar is a bustling hub of pubs, restaurants, galleries, and cultural venues, its vibrant atmosphere a far cry from its origins as a riverside walkway and private gardens. Yet, its name remains a lasting reminder of Dublin’s layered history, intertwined with the figures who shaped it and the very land on which it was built.
